Professional MBA Program - FAQs

Professional MBA Frequently Asked Questions

The information provided below addresses some of the most frequently recurring questions we field from prospective PMBA applicants.  If you have a question that isn't listed here, please feel free to contact the MBA office at (740) 593-2028 or submit your question via "Contact Us" using the navigation bar on the left side of this screen.

What is a cohort?

We refer to each entering class as a cohort.  In the PMBA, a cohort is a group of students who begin course work together and progress through the program, taking the same courses at the same time with the same group of people through graduation.  The advantage to this type of program for a student is that you're guaranteed the classes you need when you need them and that you'll graduate on time.

Is the GMAT, GRE or other standardized test required for admission?

In the PMBA, we do not require applicants to submit test scores from the GMAT or any other standardized test.  Admission decisions are weighted heavily in favor of the strength of the recommendation letters and fit.  Preference in admission is given to individuals with at least 3 years of experience.

How many credit hours is the PMBA Program?

The PMBA requires seventy credit hours to graduate. Participants are enrolled for ten hours of credit in each of the seven quarters they're enrolled.  All participants take the same courses at the same time; there are no elective courses.

Is financial aid available?

In general, the only type of financial aid available for part-time graduate study (regardless of discipline) is in the form of student loans.  To begin the loan application process, you need to complete and submit a FAFSA.  The school code for Ohio University is 003100.

Visit Ohio University's Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships to learn more about loans, scholarships and grants.  Another good resource is The College Board.

Take advantage of your employer's tuition assistance program, if one is available.

Who should write my recommendation letters?

One letter needs to be provided by your immediate supervisor.  The other two can be from former employers, professional colleagues, or an individual who has worked closely with you on a project.  Individuals who are self-employed can ask their legal counsel, accountant, or a client to submit letters in their behalf.

What if I don't have an undergraduate degree in business?

An undergraduate degree in business is not a prerequisite for admission to the PMBA.  You do need a four-year undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Is prerequisite course work necessary?

No.  The first quarter of study in the PMBA consists of the foundation work you'll need to continue in the program.

I'm an accountant/attorney.  Can the accounting/business law course be waived in my case?

No.  Since the PMBA is a cohort program, everyone completes the same course work, regardless of prior academic study or certification.

Is a laptop computer required?

Yes.  Everyone needs to have a wireless-enabled laptop computer for in-class use during evening sessions and residency periods.

How much out of class study time do I need to plan for?

On average, PMBA students need to plan for roughly 20 hours per week of out of class study time.  Of course, this varies from quarter to quarter depending on an individual's prior education.

Are career services available for PMBA students?

The College of Business provides career resources for undergraduate and M.B.A. students through our External Relations office. PMBA students also have access to services and resources through the university’s office of Career Services. Networking with other PMBA participants - who represent some of the largest and most prominent businesses in Central and Southern Ohio - is a powerful source of connections and opportunities.

How important is accreditation?

You’re known by the company you keep. The College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the most respected and highly recognized accrediting body for business programs in the world. Education is an important investment and AACSB International accredited schools are your best choice for business education.
