Management Information Systems Department - Student Awards

Hughes & Nies Awards

In 1997, the MIS department established two awards, The Hughes Award and The Nies Award, to recognize outstanding students that contribute significantly to the department as student lab assistants. These awards are given at the College of Business Annual Spring Banquet held in May of each year.

The Hughes Award
The Hughes Award is named after Robert Hughes, one of the initial supporters of the MIS program when he was vice-president at Digital Equipment Corporation.

The Nies Award
The Hughes Award is named after Thomas M. Nies, Chief Executive Officer of Cincom Systems Inc, and, one of the initial supporters of the MIS program.

Student Bios

1997
STACY WHYTE, Wellston, is this year's recipient of the Hughes Award. She maintains a 3.56 overall GPA. She has been awarded numerous scholarships throughout her college career and has been a member of the Dean"s List since 1993. She was a member of the MIS Club and interned with Nationwide Insurance, where she worked as a programmer.

SHANNON McCLINTOCK is a Management Information Systems major with a 3.55 overall GPA. She is the vice president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals Student Chapter and a member of the Bobcat Spirit Club. A senior from Englewood, she plans to work with CompuCom Systems Inc.


1998
ROBIN POWELL from Canton, Ohio is a junior who has worked as a lab assistant since January, 1998. He has an overall grade point average of 3.66 and a 4.0 average in Management Information Systems. He serves as the Web Page Administrator for his business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi and is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.

RYAN TUMA from Massillon, Ohio is a double major in Management Information Systems and Finance. Ryan plans to graduate in November 1998. He has a 3.5 grade point average and has worked as a lab assistant since March 1997. He is also a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity.


1999
JAY LUCK, of Gahanna, Ohio is a double major in Management Information Systems and Sport Industry with a 3.314 grade point average. Jay is Vice-Executive Officer of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and a member of the Sport Marketing Club, Sport Industry Major Club, and the OU mens club lacrosse team, for which he developed a web page. Jay is a work study employee for the College of Business Help Desk and a Lotus Notes teaching assistant. He has completed internships with Nationwide Insurances AOL Training Department and Pension Services. Jay will graduate next winter, after which he plans to obtain a position in the information systems industry.

DAWN WOLFE, of North Royalton, Ohio maintains a 3.409 grade point average while majoring in Management Information Systems and minoring in Interpersonal Communications. She is a former Copeland Scholar and Peer Mentor. Dawn is a member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and an active participant in intramural sports. She has completed internships with American Greetings and works as an assistant in the College of Business computer labs. After graduation in June, Dawn will join Software Architects in Cleveland, Ohio.


2000
JASON RICHLE, is a triple major in Management Information Systems, Finance and Communication Systems Management from Cincinnati, Ohio and has a 3.79 grade point average. Jason is an active member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals, serving as its President, is a Corporate Leadership Fellow, and is the treasurer of Sigma Chi. Jason has completed an internship with Great American Insurance and serves as a lab assistant in the College of Business. During the summer of 1998, Jason participated in the Global Competitiveness Program in London, England. Jason is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta, and has been on the Deans List every quarter of his college career. Jason is the recipient of the Deans Scholarship, the International Opportunity Scholarship, and the Presidential Award Representative. Upon graduation, Jason will join Conseco Capital Management in Carmel, Indiana as a fixed income research analyst.

MICHELLE SIEGLE, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a Management Information Systems major with a 3.3 grade point average. Michelle is a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, Alpha Xi Delta and the Association of Information Technology Professionals. Michelle is a lab assistant in the College of Business and has been on the Deans List . Michelle has accepted employment with National City Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio and will be working out the I/S department.


2001
TIFFANY COX - from Fairfield, Ohio is a Management Information Systems major with a 3.753 grade point average. Tiffany is currently serving as a Corporate Leadership Fellow, is a public relations chair of AITP, the vice president of the SAM, and the scholarship chair for Alpha Phi Omega. Her community service includes participating in the Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society, ReUse Industries, UCM Free Thursday Supper, Swim for Diabetes, and the Pickering-Brown Complex Council. Tiffany works in the help desk at the College of Business, completed an intership with Great American Insurance, participated in an Externship/Leadership Conference with Arthur Andersen, serves as a Resident Assistant and was the web site developer for the College of Business clusters. Tiffany is a volunteer for My Sisters Place and is responsible for100% of her college expenses. Upon graduation, Tiffany is participating as the Leader of the U.S. Delegation for an International Summer Camp in Ottawa, Canada that will include other multi-national cultures. Professionally, she will be joining the Advanced Technology Group of Andersen Consulting in Cincinnati, Ohio University.

ADAM PETERS from Mechanicsburg, Ohio is a Finance and Management Information Systems major with a 3.5 grade point average. Adam is the information systems chair of Phi Gamma Nu Professional Business Fraternity, the vice president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and serves on the charity foundation of the March of Dimes. Adam is a help desk assistant in the College of Business and will be interning this summer with Nationwide Insurance. Adam plans a career in information technology consulting.


2002
MICHAEL JIPPING - from Columbus, Ohio, is an Accounting and Management Information Systems major with a GPA of 3.19. He is the founder of the Communication Committee for Alpha Kappa Psi, and has held other committee positions with this group. The Web creator for the Singing Men of Ohio, Mike has also served as their Treasurer. He was inducted into Motar Board in the spring of 2001, and has been very active in organizing disc golf at Ohio University. His jobs throughout the college include working on the CoB web site, MIS201 lab assistant, and MIS 380 lab assistant.

KERI HARMAN - from Woodville, Ohio, is a Management Information Systems major with a GPA of 3.3. She is a member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and a four-year member of the Ohio University Marching Band where she has been Dance Chairman for two years. Keri has been on the Dean's list a number of times. She is currently a lab assistant in the College of Business, and after graduation, she plans to work with Harris Health Trends in Toledo in their Information Systems department.


2003
DAVID JACKSON - from Rocky River, Ohio, is a Management Information Systems and Accounting major with a 3.45 GPA. Dave is a member of the Phi Gamma Nu Business Fraternity, and has served as the treasurer. He has also been active in co-ed intramural volleyball. He has worked as a web designer for several different departments within the College of Business including the Dean's Office, School of Accountancy, and the Sales Centre. Dave has been a Help Desk Assistant at the College of Business wince June, 2000. He is pursuing a job in IT consulting.

AMANDA HANNAH - is a Management Information Systems and Finance major from Lucasville, Ohio with a 3.88 GPA. She was a member of the Ohio University Portfolio Management Group and Beta GAmma Sigma. While at Ohio University, Amanda worked at the Office of Admissions as a Student Associate and Tour Guide. She was also employed at the Academic Advancement Center as a Supplemental Instructor in Calculus. Her summer internships were with Bank One in Columbus as an Investment Management Group Accountant and with Andersen LLP in Columbus as a Business Consultant. Amanda completed her undergraduate studies at Ohio University a the end of Winter Quarter, and is now employed at National City Bank In Columbus as a Credit Analyst in the Commercial Banking Credit Department.


2004
SHAUN PEET - a Management Information Systems (MIS) and Finance major from Goderich, Ontario, Canada with a 3.79 GPA. A member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Shaun's primary focus has bee baseball. He played varsity baseball for the past two years, and was namend the 2003 Ohio Baseball Pitcher of the Year. Other honors include the 2003 All-MAC Academic Team and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Shaun has worked at Ohio Univeristy Campus Recreation (Bird Arena) as a manager and supervisor. He is the webmaster for the Ohio Hockey program, creating the new www.ohiobobcatshockey.com. He is also the webmaster for the Ohio University Area Health Edcuation Center. After graduation, Shaun plans to work as the head IT consultant/developer for Microage Basics in Goderich, Ontario, Canada.

JACQUELINE PIKE - from McMurray, Pennsylvania is a junior in the Honors Tutorial College with a major in Business Administration and specializations in Management Information Systems and Management and Strategic Leadership with a 3.91 GPA. Jacqueline holds offices in the Ohio University Association of Colegiate Entrepreneurs and Phi Gamma Nu Professional Business Fraternity, as is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the Ohio University Association of Information Technology Professionals. She has been selected to serve on the Ohio University Information Technology Steering Committee, and is a 2004-2005 Corporate Leadership Fellow. Jacqueline was recently named a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP). This award is given to professionals who foster an active participation in the technical communities across the globe. She also has been on the Dean's List every quarter. Jacqueline has worked as an Information Technology Intern for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation; as a Quality Assurance Intern at Fiserv SourceOne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; as a Computer Lab Manager and Professorial Assistant at Ohio University. Following graduation, Jacqueline would like to either enroll in graduate school to eventually get her doctorate in Management Informaiton Systems or get a job with a technology-oriented company.


2005
CHAD WEINMAN - has spent his time at Ohio University studying Management Information Systems, International Business, French, and life in general. He has been involved with the Association of Information Technology Professionals, serving as the organization's president as well as holding an executive position with the International Business Society. During his college career, Chad has gained professional experience while working with four separate companies and numerous organizations. Chad has been a huge advocate for self learning and has strived to obtain a strong knowledge base beyond the curriculum. He can commonly be found in the basement labs of Copeland Hall assisting other students, working on projects, or even teaching a workshop. Outside of academia, Chad is an avid rock climber, summiting the Grand Teton last summer and now setting his eyes on Mount Rainier. Chad is excited about his next adventure in life as he begins an IT security position this fall with Deloitte in Columbus, Ohio.

NATALIE MONOS - of Niles, Ohio will be graduating in June with a dual major in Management Information Systems and Finance and a concentration in Mathematics with a 3.75 GPA. Natalie has served on the Executive Board of Phi Gamma Nu Professional Business Fraternity for two years as President and Pledge Educator as well as holding leadership positions in the Association for Information Technology Professionals and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She is also a Corporate Leadership Fellow, an Ohio University Business Fellow, a Copeland Scholar, and was a member of the Freshman Engagement Program where she served as a mentor for College of Business freshmen. Natalie is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Golden Key International honor societies. She has been on the Dean's List every quarter and traveled to Pecs, Hungary with the Global Competitiveness Program in 2003. Natalie has worked with the Academic Advancement Center as a tutor and with the Management Information Systems department helping to develop course materials. In addition, she worked with Cardinal Health as an intern for Enterprise Information Technology in the areas of Finance and Human Resources and is currently a Virtual Intern. In July, Natalie will be starting with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Chicago where she will be working with the Forensic Technology Solutions and Investigations Group.
