The MIS Major
The Competitive Advantage
The Management Information Systems (MIS) program was started in 1982 to teach business students how to use the latest technology to solve business problems. MIS majors are not trained to be computer technicians but to be business professionals who know how to use computers to manage information. Business employers have had difficulty hiring computer science majors because their lack of business background makes it difficult for them to communicate with the business users their systems are designed to support. The MIS program is designed to create graduates with both general business knowledge and a technical background that makes them ideally suited to designing systems to support business functions and processes.
The Program
The MIS program has been recognized as a program of excellence and is a recipient of an Academic Challenge grant by the Ohio Board of Regents. The grant enables the department to continually update its computer facilities to provide students access to current technology. The College of Business alone has over 150 computer stations available for student use 80 hours each week in its four instructional labs. MIS courses use a combination of classroom and hands-on lab activities to provide students with both conceptual knowledge and technical skills that make them immediately employable in the job market.
The Profession
The two main career paths related to the MIS program are information systems consulting and business analysis. MIS graduates are hired for a variety of positions including information technology consultants, systems analysts, database administrators, and quality assurance. Starting salaries for MIS graduates are pushing the $50,000+ mark!
