The Original CSB Major - 1984 Computer Systems in Business
Recent advances have made it easier for business people to operate their own computers. That's a major reason why the college developed the computer systems in business (CSB) major.
The CSB program teaches students how to use the latest technology to solve business problems. CSB majors are not trained to be computer technicians or programmers. Instead, they are trained to be business managers who know how to use computers to manage information.
The College of Business Administration has state-of-the-art computer hardware and software. CSB students learn business applications on the University's IBM 4381 mainframe, the college's own VAX 11/780 super-minicomputer, and IBM or Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) microcomputers.
Applications are developed on the microcomputers using relational database management systems, fourth generation languages, office automation software, and programs like Lotus 1-2-3.
The college and the CSB program have the latest and most modern hardware and software of any business school in the United States.
The equipment is technologically superior to that available in any program in the country, and our computer accessibility has been cited as the best in the state and among the best in the nation. The college has 56 computer stations available for student use 80 hours each week in its two instructional labs. In addition, the University facilities include two larger labs with terminals and microcomputers.
The CSB curriculum includes, in addition to the college's core requirements, a seven-course sequence in computer-related courses. All CSB majors must complete Introduction to File Processing, Cobol I and II, Systems I and II, and Database I and II. In upper-level courses, CSB majors work in groups to design, develop, and implement sophisticated business systems, using the database software.
CSB graduates are hired in the computer area as systems analysts, database administrators, or information center consultants. In mid--level management positions they can use their advanced computer skills in fields such as marketing research, financial analysis, production management, or similar areas.
