Nies Dedicates Gift
Thomas M. Nies
"Little errors in the beginning become great errors in the end," says Thomas M. Nies, chief executive officer of Cincom Systems, Inc. Speaking at a dedication event honoring Cincom's major software gift to the College, Nies traced the hazardous path of software development.
According to the Cincom chief, software evolved gradually while computer hardware made revolutionary progress, eroding the cost effectiveness of software. Citing the emergence of interactive computer languages, Nies called for new beginnings in
the software field. He praised the College's computer systems in business program - unique in training students on a relational database - for educating students in the new ideas which will be the wave of the future.
"Too many universities teach their students simply to be workers in the new technology," he says. "They should be teaching them to be leaders." Nies' lecture to students and faculty in early March was part of dedication ceremonies for the $250,000 gift of Ultra and Mantis software to the College.
