Identified as a "center of excellence," the College's computer systems in business area received an initial $150,000 award in February through the Ohio Board Regents prestigious Academic Challenge program. Computer systems in business was one of three programs on the Athens campus to receive an Academic Challenge award.
Academic Challenge funding also gives a permanent adjustment to the CSB budget for the future, adding a $150,000 base each year. "This enables us to develop and expand a program in a rapidly changing area," CBA Dean John E.Stinson says.
Funds from the program will add two more computer laboratories to Copeland Hall, bringing the College's number of labs to four. In addition the funds will support a new faculty member, a software technician, faculty professional development and equipment maintenance.
Conceived to extend support of programs vital to Ohio's future economic needs, the Academic Challenge program has a budget of $21.7 million this biennium; it awards supplemental funding equal to one percent of an institution's state subsidy.
Ohio University initially considered 17 of its programs for potential Challenge funding. Following Board of Regents guidelines, the University judged programs for quality and selected three for awards including computer systems in business, the molecular and cellular biology program, and the telecommunications program.
